Working in a Restaurant

Working in a restaurant has its both positive and negative aspects as do all types of jobs. There are all sorts of different job roles available for those working in a restaurant. These include;

Waiter
Waitress
Bar Tender
Head Chef
Sous Chef
Cleaner
Manager
Pot Washer
Front of House

Each of these roles are very important within the restaurant, and so always need to be filled.

A waiter or waitress role is to be there to;

Take guests drinks orders
Take their food order
Let the guests know of any items that are unavailable from the menu or any specials that are available
Let the kitchen staff know if there are any special food requirements of their guests i.e. dietary or allergy needs
Put the food correctly through the till
Keep an eye on food delays and times their guests have been waiting
Checking on and assisting to any of their guests needs
Presenting them with the bill
Taking payment and wishing them a safe journey home

A bar tenders role is to;

Serve drinks on the bar to anyone wishing to sit in this area and have a drink before sitting at their table
Receive drinks orders from the waiter/waitress and process this order as quickly and as efficiently as possible
Stock bar at start and end of shift, and restock if necessary during the shift
Maintain a clean and presentable bar at all times

The chefs are responsible for;

Creating specials for each evening/weekly
Preparing any food that can be done beforehand
Cooking food as quickly and as efficiently as possible
Corresponding with waiters/waitresses regarding guests specific needs
Keeping an eye on food times
Presenting the food in their best manner

A Front of House or MaƮtre D are responsible for;

Greeting guests as they enter the restaurant
Sitting them to a table
Advising them of any waiting time on tables or food
Making waiters/waitresses aware that they have guests which they may need to attend to
Keeping a clear and correct table waiting list

Pot Washers are there to;

Clean all dishes efficiently and as quickly as possible
Maintain a clean and clear kitchen area

Cleaners are there to;

Come in before and after the restaurant is open and make it clean and presentable for guests and staff to come in to.
